WFUNA Young Leader of 2018

Andrea Calzada Morales from UNA Mexico has been chosen as WFUNA’s Young Leader of 2018 for her outstanding contribution towards achieving SDG 5 on gender equality and women’s empowerment. Andrea comes from the family of Mexican migrants deported from the United States. Being little, she faced serious problems related to gender equality in Mexico due to it being one of the most violent in the world for women. Andrea found her passion in sports and turned a love for soccer into a social innovation tool for the empowerment of women in Mexico. At the age of 14, Andrea formed her first soccer team in Zacatecas. With the help of private, public, and non-profit associations she developed the Rosa Zacatecas Ball Project, which promotes sport practice as an integral way for personal development for Zacatecas women.

In 2011, she became a member of the National Street Soccer Team and participated in the Homeless World Cup in Paris. She worked at CEFERESO (Women’s Social Readaption Center in Zacatecas), where she was able to further projects related to women empowerment through sport. As a result of these efforts, Andrea was recognized by the Government of Zacatecas with a Life Stories of Zacatecan Women award on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Currently, Andrea works for UNA Mexico and coordinates the implementation of the Community Sports Project, which focuses on girls, boys, and women playing sports. This project works to integrate information on the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 5 on gender equality, promoting the exercise of human rights, and highlighting the importance of civic values in daily life.
