WFUNA's Peace and Security Work

UNSC Exit Briefing

Under the auspices of the United Nations’ promotion of international peace and security, WFUNA works to promote the development of peaceful coexistence and cooperation among and within nations. WFUNA actively works with United Nations Associations (UNAs) from around the world, various entities and actors within the United Nations, civil society organizations, and academia to support the UN in its efforts to maintain international peace and security. At the national level, WFUNA runs Peace and Security programmes with member UNAs, while working on policy and advocacy issues at the global level at the UN Headquarters in New York.

In May 2016, WFUNA convened the first-ever UN Security Council (UNSC) Election Debates for Member States competing within their regional blocks for a non-Permanent seat on the UNSC. Similar in spirit to the campaigns launched to promote transparency in the selection of the ninth Secretary-General of the UN in 2016, including the One for 7 Billion campaign of which WFUNA was a part, these debates are designed to open up the UNSC to the larger UN Community, while providing a platform by which elected Member States are then held accountable to stated priorities during their terms on the Council.

Building on the successes of the 2016 UNSC Debates, WFUNA then launched a dialogue series in early 2017, where civil society organizations (CSOs) directly engage with rotating UNSC Presidents on her or his Programme of Work and shared priorities. Open to all UN-accredited NGOs and webcast for online engagement, this initiative attempts to break down barriers between the UNSC and civil society across the peace and security, development and humanitarian spectrum.

Having held two successful UNSC Election Debate series (2016 and 2018), and fifteen UNSC Presidency-CSO Dialogues since 2017, WFUNA launched a new initiative in January 2019 - UNSC Exit Briefings for outgoing members of the Council, a first in the history of the United Nations.

WFUNA’s other activities relating to peace and security focus on Peace in the 2030 Agenda (Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies); Youth, Peace and Security; and the Emerging Role of Peace Operations.
