Dear Colleagues,

This year we celebrate the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ 20 years of achievements. Today, OHCHR is the leading institution charged with implementing international human rights and a crucial partner to WFUNA and UNAs worldwide. I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the role of WFUNA and United Nations Associations in advocating for the establishment of the Office in the lead up to its creation in 1993.

More than a thousand participants from over 100 countries gathered in Geneva this year for the Second UN Annual Forum on Business and Human Rights (2-4 December 2013), to collectively assess global progress in the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on the issue.

The second UN Youth Delegate in our Q&A series is Dr. Richard Bido Medina from the Dominican Republic. The 23-year-old received his medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo at 21 and also works as a teaching assistant in physiology and pharmacology at the Universidad Catolica Tecnologica del Cibao. Along with his medical experience, Bido Medina has also participated in over 40 model UNs as a delegate and staff.

On 25-26 November 2013 WFUNA held its bi-annual regional meeting of European United Nations Associations.

Forty representatives from 19 UNAs, including 15 youth representatives, participated in the meeting. Represented UNAs included Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

In 1995, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the World Programme of Action for Youth, which invited member states to include youth representatives in their delegation. Thus, the UN Youth Delegate program was born. Almost 20 years later, the program has provided opportunities for youth participation within UN bodies such as the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee (also known as the Third Committee) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Established in 2010 by Videlle, This Girl Bakes specializes in beautifully crafted cupcakes as well as novelty, carved and fondant cakes suited for all types of events. Based in New York, Videlle--familiar to the non-profit industry--was gracious enough to provide baked goods for our UN Day event!

GENEVA - Once again WFUNA had the pleasure of welcoming 15 remarkable students selected by our university partner, the Research Centre of United Nations and International Organizations (RCUNIO), to attend our Advanced Training at the UN: China Program in Geneva from 30 September to 4 October. The participants engaged in a busy five-day program focusing on the UN at Geneva, Environment, Sustainable Development, International Labor, International Trade, Communication Technology, Humanitarian Aid and Career Development.

GENEVA - The Human Rights Council convened for its 24th Session from 9 to 27 September 2013 in the Palais des Nations in Geneva. In the three weeks of intense discussion, human rights violations in the Syrian conflict, as presented by the report of the Commission of Inquiry on Syria, were among the most burning issues addressed. Some of the major topics that were under discussion are briefly summarized below.
