NEW YORK – During its 209th meeting on November 15, 2014, members of WFUNA’s Executive Committee adopted and issued a statement on ISIL.

The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) condemns the recent acts of terror committed by the group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

WFUNA denounces the recent military advances of ISIL, and the atrocities on thousands of civilians in Iraq and Syria. These horrific human rights violations and the systematic and intentional killings committed by ISIL are tantamount to war crimes or crimes against humanity as reported by various UN Agencies.

We call upon all actors in the region to respect universally held humanitarian principles. The protection of civilians must take central precedence for the international community and regional actors.

WFUNA urges all Member States to work together to produce a coherent, creative and multi-faceted response to the threats faced. A military approach alone cannot produce a sustainable solution.

A strong focus must be placed on the root causes of ISIL’s advance. World leaders must work to address issues of regional autonomy and sectarian and minority discrimination in an inclusive and participatory manner.

The United Nations and members of the Security Council must recognize that a true solution to the current crisis can only be comprehensively addressed if both regional and global powers cooperate. If members of the international community are fully committed about contributing towards lasting peace, we must also take action to ameliorate other conflicts that exist in the region.

WFUNA urges the United Nations to use all tools at its disposal: diplomatic, political, new Peace Operations, and measures under Chapter 7. This would be part of a wider United Nations solution to construct a long-term peacebuilding project for Iraq, Syria and the region.

WFUNA calls upon the international community to promote an expanded role for the United Nations in Iraq and Syria.
