WFUNA's 40th Plenary Assembly received a special message from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

In her message, the High Commissioner highlighted the key role played by civil society in raising awareness about human rights violations and commended the relentless work carried out by WFUNA and its affiliated UNAs promoting the values of the United Nations and human rights throughout the world.

Turning to a topic of shared concern, Ms. Pillay expressed grave preoccupation over continuing reprisals targeting civil society actors and human rights defenders including arrests, legislative actions to curtail NGOs and media smear campaigns. WFUNA welcomes her pledge to pay close attention to these concerns and prioritize them in meetings with governments.

WFUNA is pleased to take note of her confidence in our new program, Civil Society in Action for Human Rights, starting in the beginning of next year. The aim of the program is to empower UNAs to effectively use international human rights mechanisms and implement advocacy activities to advance national human rights issues and will be carried out over a three-year period.

For WFUNA it is encouraging to feel the support of the High Commissioner and her Office as we continue to promote and protect full enjoyment of human rights for all. We thank Ms. Pillay for her contribution to our 40th Plenary Assembly and wish her and her Office continued success in their work.
