NEW YORK, NY - WFUNA is delighted to announce that Ambassador Sofia Borges has been appointed by the President-elect of the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Peter Thomson of Fiji, to the Office of the President of the General Assembly(PGA)  for the 71st session. Ambassador Borges, who currently serves as WFUNAs Special Adviser on the 2030 Agenda, will join the Office of the PGA as the Special Adviser on Strategic Engagement and Transparency.

Ambassador Borges will lead work on strategic engagement with Member States and non-state actors and oversee activities within the Office to ensure the maximum level of transparency possible. During the 71st session for the PGA Office, Ambassador Borges will work to ensure that the recent growing tide of transparency continues at the United Nations.

Ambassador Borges, the former Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the UN, has been a strong ally for civil society throughout her diplomatic career.

“For WFUNA, our network of over 100 United Nations Associations (UNAs), and indeed the community of civil society actors working to strengthen the United Nations, this appointment is great news,” noted WFUNA Secretary-General, Mr. Bonian Golmohammadi. “We must congratulate the President-elect of the UN General Assembly for matching his strong rhetoric on promoting transparency with an even stronger show of action."

Whilst Ambassador Borges will leave WFUNA in mid August to take up her new post, WFUNA has every faith that she will continue to be the strongest advocate for civil society engagement at the UN.
