41st WFUNA Plenary Assembly Adopted 2 Statements on Violent Extremism, Refugee Crisis
Monday, November 30, 2015

The 41st WFUNA Plenary Assembly in Vancouver, Canada, 20-22 November 2015, endorsed and adopted two statements on violent extremism and the refugee crisis.

The adopted statement on Violent Extremism expresses deep sympathy with all victims of recent terrorist atrocities, whilst strongly condemning each attack. The Plenary Assembly calls on the international community to work to take ‘immediate and meaningful action to invest in peace and work to prevent violent extremism.’ Policy makers must ‘make conscious efforts not to replicate dynamics which provoke grievances,’ while ensuring the ‘protection of civilian populations as a priority.’

The adopted statement on the Refugee Crisis with respect to people fleeing areas of violent conflict again deplores the horrific recent spate of terrorist attacks, and implores the international community to strengthen efforts to support the settlement of refugee populations attempting to escape war. The statement urges decision makers to "act compassionately whilst not infringing the very immutable values that are under attack and which they seek to defend.”
