Human Rights Day 2012

This year’s Human Rights Day focuses on “inclusion and the right to participate in public life.” For WFUNA and our affiliated UNAs, the right to participate in public life underpins our very foundations; it is also a key goal in our efforts to empower global citizens worldwide. Realization of rights related to freedom of expression and opinion, freedom of assembly and association and non-discrimination, and the development of democratic societies, are crucial to our mission, based on our belief that peoples’ involvement in all levels of local, national and global decision-making is essential in order to achieve the goals of the United Nations.

WFUNA's affiliated United Nations Associations are making phenomenal efforts to promote Human Rights Day, hosting events including:

  • UNA Australia is commemorating the day with a lecture and film screening
  • UNA New Zealand invites its member organizations to a Christmas lunch and roundtable discussion
  • UNA Sweden organizes a panel discussion on the Rights of Roma people
  • UNA United Kingdom hosts a brunch-fundraiser
  • UNA Zimbabwe organized a football tournament, "Kick out Human Rights Ignorance", in which 18 teams participated,

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights invites you and activists worldwide to share thoughts and ideas about the right to participate in public and political decision making, using the hashtag #VoiceCount on Twitter.

At United Nations office in Geneva, the celebrations include keynote remarks by Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi. Similarly at the headquarters in New York, prominent human rights defenders will participate in the event.

Your voice, your right. Your voice counts!
