Dag Hammarskjöld Symposium Series
Dag Hammarskjöld was a firm advocate of the absolute sovereignty of states and the UN’s role to protect states from external attack and keeping the peace between “sovereigns”. He rejected the ideas of great powers that could enforce peace or settle political disputes in favour of peacekeeping in the form of mediation and conciliation which respected equal sovereignty of states. While R2P challenges Hammarskjöld’s idea of strong state sovereignty it is in fact aligned with Hammarskjöld’s call for action to prevent conflict.

In 2011 and 2012, WFUNA provided a forum for increased diverse and regional dialogue on R2P by organizing a Symposium in Venezuela, Caracas, Beijing, China and Nairobi, Kenya throughout the year. WFUNA invited key members of the UN community, government officials, civil society members and members of regional UNAs to participate and discuss the tension between state sovereignty, the role of intervention and its implications on the R2P norm. To engage key stakeholders, both at an international and regional level, in the R2P debate and to honor the contribution Hammarskjöld provided to understanding state sovereignty and intervention participants will be asked to use his philosophy as a framework for rethinking the future of the implementation of the R2P norm.
