Hans BlixSTUDENTS FOR A NUCLEAR WEAPONS-FREE WORLD

Two basic ideas at the heart of the NPT continue to have strong international support – that more fingers on more nuclear triggers would result in a more dangerous world, and that non-proliferation by the have-nots and disarmament by the haves will together lead to a safer world.’ (WMDC Report, 2006)

Dr. Hans Blix, President of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, in partnership with the World Academy of Art and Science, is launching a series of initiatives to engage students, from diverse academic disciplines, in preparation for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) 8th Review Conference, 2010 – the most important conference on global disarmament in coming years.

Initial disarmament steps are vital in order to reduce the danger of nuclear weapons use by accident, miscalculation or intent, whether by governments or non-State actors. However, the nuclear threat will only be eliminated through the comprehensive prohibition of nuclear weapons, which would require a fundamental shift in security thinking by the nuclear weapon States.

The Student for a Nuclear Weapons-Free World (SNWFW) initiative is designed to encourage young people from around the world to become informed, and inform others, on the realities of the nuclear weapons threat. The more informed the younger generations are, the better the prospect of a nuclear weapons-free world becomes. This goal is not a utopian dream – but in order to succeed, we must first educate and mobilize the youth.

MDG logoSMLJuly 7, 2007 marked the midpoint of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) target period.  This is a vital opportunity for the global community to pause and asses our progress and future work towards meeting the Goals by 2015.

The MDGs were established through the Millennium Declaration in 2000 with the aim of cutting extreme poverty in half by 2015.  They rely on quantitative targets and allow for progress to be measured through a set of indicators. To view the MDGs, please click here >>

Since their inception, the MDGs have transformed the context of development policy discourse.  Poverty reduction has become a priority on the global agenda and the MDGs extend this responsibility to the entire international community.

Who We Are

WFUNA LOGO

Inspired by the opening words of the United Nations Charter "We the Peoples", the World Federation of United Nations Associations was established in 1946 as a peoples’ movement for the United Nations.

Today the World Federation is a global network of hundreds of thousands of people linked together through United Nations Associations (UNAs) in over 100 nation states.   They have many and diverse programs, such as Adopt-a-Minefield, the Millennium Development Goals, Model UN conferences, human rights education and as well they provide regular media and parliamentary briefings on UN matters.  As testimony to their valuable role, UNAs are the only national level organizations entitled to use the UN emblem.

The Plenary Assembly, the supreme organ of the World Federation, is held every three years.  It is in effect a peoples’ assembly for the United Nations, where priority issues of concern to the international community are addressed and elections are held for the leadership positions.

Today, the World Federation has an ever more important role to play in fulfillment of its primary objective of being a ‘peoples’ movement for the UN’.   We have inherited a great responsibility to help  make the United Nations an ever more effective instrument for world peace and security, development and human rights and to bring the United Nations ever more closer to the real concerns and interests of  “We the Peoples”.

UNA of the Month for May:
UNA-Ireland

The Irish UN Association was founded in 1959. Its past Presidents have included the Irish statesman and Nobel Laureate, Sean McBride and its former patron is Mary Robinson (photo left), who was President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Its present patron is Her Excellency, Mary McAleese, President of Ireland and the President is Senator John Connor, a distinguished politician.

The main projects currently being implemented by the Association are on UN peacekeeping, climate change, the rights of children, human rights and development education and the challenge of human migration.  The Association promotes public debate among a diverse group of people, including academics, politicians, diplomats, peacekeepers and Garda (Irish police force), armed forces veteran organizations, media institutions and civil society groups.

A key annual priority for IUNA is the celebration of major events of the UN calendar in Ireland. IUNA organizes events to mark International Women’s Day, World Health Day, Earth Day, UN peacekeepers Day, UN Day, World AIDS Day and Human Rights Day. This year IUNA organized a special commemorative ceremony to mark the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. A particular focus has been placed in developing the youth membership. The Association has been represented at various WFUNA youth activities in recent years and offers the comprehensive University and Senior Schools Initiative (USSI).

IUNA is the country partner for the UN Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) based in Brussels. In all its activities the Irish UN Association reflects an Irish perspective on the aims and purposes of the UN Charter.
