(UNA-Haiti) / (AHNU)
United Nations Association Haiti is a citizens' organization established in Haiti in August 2004 joining a global network of hundreds of thousands of people linked together. There are now 130 United Nations Association worldwide. The network enables people everywhere to connect on critical global issues affecting us all, from peace and human rights to the spread of democracy, equitable development, and international justice.
UNA-Haiti is accredited by the World Federation of United Nations Association (WFUNA) as of March 2005.
After 200 years of political freedom, the opportunity exists to usher-in a new era of fresh thinking in Haiti to pave the way towards an economic revolution that answers to the aspiration of the great majority braving still hopelessness and poverty on a daily basis. Despite skepticism on the part of the Haitian population about the role of the United Nations, the country will have to rely greatly on international assistance in order to stage this revolution. Therefore, it is imperative that Haitian interlocutors do away with the popular but counterproductive slogans of the past and instead encourage people to move forward in a spirit of friendship, partnership, consensus-building with their fellow Haitians as well as with the outside world. While there will continue to be disagreements among the actors, one area of potential consensus that is peremptory is Humanitarian. UNA-Haiti will seek to make the process towards a unified Humanitarian Course of Action the #1 priority as key to build common grounds, to put peace to work, and ultimately cancel out the security problems at the surface.
The mission of the (UNA-HAITI) is to mobilize Haitian support for the principles and objectives of the United Nations, to help shape the United Nations programs in Haiti and to promote development and peace within Haiti.
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) put forward by the Millennium Summit is a political framework where rich and poor nations would work together to meet a number of practical and affordable targets in the coming decade
UNA-Haiti proposes to establish a small group of experts who would identify Haiti's areas of priorities and make recommendations to help mobilize the needed resources to meet the Goals. They would also examine and report on the inextricable relationship between Government and Civil Society as getting these two aspects of the nation's fabric to work in harmony is one very important way forward to stable and good governance for the country.
UNA-Haiti is seeking a grant to launch the Information Exchange Initiative on Haiti. The program is aimed at the creation of a database to identify and compile a list of undergoing or planned activities on the ground that are or would be undertaken with external assistance. The database will enlist activities by non-profit organizations, associations, private sector, academic institutions and their Haitian partner. The findings will help stimulate more activities of the kind with an emphasis to incubate partnership between Haitian organizations and International counterparts. Please call 212 867-4360.
UNA-Haiti will join with perspective partners to offer more meetings in New York and in Haiti in the interest of the membership. Those who become members enjoy the benefits of attending meetings free of charge. Organizations interested in joint-meetings with UNA-Haiti to contact our New York office at 212 867-4360.
