 African Regional Model United Nations

ARMUN LogoOver 150 students from 25 countries participated at the first WFUNA African Model UN Conference, hosted by the United Nations Association of South Africa and held at Stellenbosch University in South Africa from 5 to 8 September, 2005. "The students are emphasizing the importance of the full participation of the African Union in achieving the MDGs, and the need for all of us in civil society to build partnerships with each other, with our governments and with sub-regional bodies" said Cedric de Coning, Secretary-General of UNA-South Africa. Transforming global agricultural trade barriers and policies and alleviating the debt burden on African countries to enable them to devote resources to development are the first two requirements set out in the resolution.

The goal of ARMUN was to produce a General Assembly resolution outlining the 10 most important steps necessary to achieve the Millennium Development Goals in Africa by 2015.  This goal was achieved after several days of negotiation and compromise.  ARMUN voted unanimously in support of the final document.
