Anniversary Message from Kofi Annan
THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
--
MESSAGE FOR THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS OF THE WORLD FEDERATION OF UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATIONS
New York, 2 August 2006
For 60 years, the World Federation of United Nations Associations and its member Associations have rallied people in support of the work and ideals of the United Nations.
Education has been central to the Federation's work. By raising local awareness and ownership of the activities of the United Nations, WFUNA members help make the Organization more responsive to peoples' needs.
More recently, WFUNA has mobilized impressive grassroots support for the Millennium Development Goals. Its annual reports, round-table dialogues, seminars, workshops, and regional Model UN conferences have all helped generate support for national and community-specific MDG campaigns.
Perhaps most encouraging, by prioritizing the participation of young people in its activities, the Federation is preparing a new generation of global citizens, and helping ensure its and, I hope, the United Nations' vigor for another 60 years.
I am pleased that your 38th Plenary Assembly will be convened, for the first time, in Latin America later this year. Your worldwide reach and grassroots presence symbolize, in many ways, what the drafters must have had in mind when they penned the stirring words "We, the People of the United Nations" in the preamble to the UN Charter.
On behalf of the United Nations Secretariat and its staff, thank you for your many years of advocacy and assistance. I and my colleagues are most appreciative of what you do, and you can count on our support as you pursue your goals of peace, development, human rights and democracy.

UN Partnerships in Action: Implementing the Millennium Declaration
Migration and Devel opment - the "Hearings"
On 12 July 2006 the General Assembly held its first informal interactive hearings with civil society and private sector representatives on international migration and development. NGO representatives highlighted the importance of a rights-based approach to international migration that should include labor rights for all migrants, universal access to health and social services, and the regularization of all undocumented migrants. Particular attention was paid to vulnerable groups who need special protection. Welcoming the suggestion of Secretary-General Kofi Annan to establish a permanent forum on migration at the UN, they encouraged a larger and more meaningful role for civil society in such an institution. Migration and Development will be the theme of the high-level segment of the 61st General Assembly in September. See: www.un.org/esa/population/hldmigration/NGO_Hearings.html
WFUNA Launches Global Essay Competition on WMDs

Amnesty International Launched Global Campaign against Internet Repression
Following the success of the launch of its internet freedom campaign in the UK , Amnesty International is going global with Irrepressible Information. The campaign aims to claim back the web as a force for change in the face of an increasing willingness on the part of technology companies to aid censorship and repression. Governments in some countries are cracking down on those who use the internet to communicate their views and denying citizens access to its wealth of information. The organization is urging internet users around the world to sign the petition calling on governments and companies to respect internet freedom that is available at: http://irrepressible.info
The online pledges will be collected and presented at a key UN meeting on the future of the internet in November 2006.
Transparency of the Security Council
Security Council Report is an independent not-for-profit organization in affiliation with Columbia University's Center on International Organization that was founded with the encouragement of Secretary-General, Kofi Annan. The vision for this initiative stems from the belief that the lack of consistent, high quality, publicly-available information about the Council's activities is a consistent barrier to the effective performance of the Council itself as well as constituting a major handicap for the Member States at large, and the wider public. Security Council Report seeks to fill this gap by establishing an independent professional capacity, supported by a first-rate research staff, to provide information and analysis on the activities of the Security Council. The intention is to publish regular reports on the Council's existing and prospective agenda, supplemented by ad hoc bulletins on breaking news.
