25 European United Nations Associations met in Geneva on 17 and 18 March to renew contacts, gather information from each other and share best practises and experience. The Symposium was organized by WFUNA and sponsored by UNA-Switzerland. At the end of the two-day meeting the UNAs came up with recommendations to be presented at the next Executive Committee meeting.

Annual Meetings for UNAs

Each year WFUNA holds a meeting for United Nations Associations around the world. It is help in conjunction with the Annual UN Department of Public Information/NGO Confernce.

There are 2 main aims for the meeting:

1. To share information and ideas on the role of UNAs and WFUNA as a people's movement in support of the UN - with a particular focus on the implementation of the Millennium Declaration.

2. To give all UNAs an opportunity to participate in the renewal of WFUNA and shaping our strategic directions.

2003 Annual Meeting for UNAs
UNA Meeting 2003The 2003 Annual Meeting for UNAs was held on September 7 in New York.
It was attended by 50 people, representing 32 UNAs. A number of NGO representatives participated as observers.

The focus on the discussion was on two main issues:
1. Future strategic directions for WFUNA
2. WFUNA’s contribution to the UN Panel on Relations with Civil Society

2002 Annual Meeting for UNAs
The 2002 Annual Meeting for UNAs was held on September 8, 2002 in New York. It was attended by 46 participants, representing 22 UNAs. It was chaired by Sirpa Pietikäinen, Chair of the WFUNA Executive Committee

The focus of discussion was on three main issues:
1. WFUNA's report: We the People - A Call to Action for the UN Millennium Declaration
2. WFUNA and Model UN
3. Aims and objectives for the 37th WFUNA Plenary, 2003

2001 Annual Meeting for UNAs
The Annual meeting for UNAs was held on September 8-10 in New York and was attended by 30 representatives of UNAs.

The group of people who came together for the meeting was diverse, and well balanced in terms of age and gender, with many active young participants. They endorsed WFUNA's new strategic directions, including development of an online peoples' movement for the UN. They shared ideas about how UNAs could communicate with each other and WFUNA more effectively, including strategies for promoting support for the UN in their countries.

37th Plenary Assembly 

8-11 May 2003
Barcelona, Spain

The 37th Plenary Assembly of WFUNA convened from 8-11 May 2003 at the World Trade Center in Barcelona, Spain. More than 200 delegates from 57 United Nations Associations, including many young people, gathered for the three days of events. Unfortunately, due to medical and travel concerns about SARS, the UNAs of China, India and Jamaica were not present.

The UNA-Spain, a dynamic and engaged host, presided over the successful Friday Conference on the theme: The United Nations - Our Hope, Our Future. Following welcoming statements from Spanish dignitaries and a message from UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, H.E. Jan Kavan, President of the UN General Assembly, gave the keynote address. There was a panel discussion on the Global Millennium Campaign and Global Governance with remarks from Eveline Herfkens, the Executive Coordinator for the MDG Campaign, and Michael Doyle, former Special Advisor to Annan. In the afternoon, Guy-Olivier Segond and Louise Lassonde, spoke about the World Summit on Information Society. Other lead Plenarydiscussants were Dr. Necla Tshirgi, Vice President of the International Peace Academy, Dr. Josep Xercavins of UBUNTU and Professor Michael Simai, WFUNA Honorary President.

The Plenary Assembly was held on Saturday and Sunday. WFUNA Secretary-General, Ambassador Donald Blinken, reported on the work of Secretariat, its programs, activities structure and its financial status. Ambassador Blinken was elected to serve as WFUNA Secretary-General until September 2004.

The Assembly elected a new President, Lady Rhyl Jansen, 3 new Vice Presidents, Mr. Ricardo Dominicé, Mr. Sayed Shahed, and Ms. Helen Drayton; a new Treasurer, Mr. Ramaz Aptsiauri; and 9 Executive Committee members, Ms. Margaret Reynolds, Mr. Carlos Amat Forés, Ms. Pavla Korusova, Dr. Christos Theodoulou, Prof. Ervin Gömbös, Mrs. Rena Shashua-Hasson, Ms. Ángels Mataró, Professor Adballa Ahmed Abdalla, and Mr. Aleksander Gabelic.

The Assembly considered and adopted several constitutional amendments and resolutions such as on the Situation in Iraq, the Campaign for the Millennium Development Goals, Human Rights Education and Sustainable Development.

A parallel meeting of youth delegates from around the world met and formed WFUNA-Youth, a global youth network that is now affiliated with WFUNA.
