Following the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and IMF, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) is deeply concerned that relief efforts for Iraq are threatening to drain resources from the war against poverty in the rest of the world. In particular, the commitments made three years ago to the Millennium Development Goals must not be forgotten. These Goals call for reducing by half the percentage of people living in poverty by 2015, as well as reductions in child mortality and HIV/AIDS and expanded access to safe drinking water and education. On current trends, poverty is expected to climb in many places, including Africa and the Middle East.
The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) lends full support to the efforts of Secretary-General Kofi Annan to encourage members of the Security Council to agree upon a new UN resolution authorizing the necessary security, humanitarian, reconstruction, and political measures required for post-conflict Iraq. Such a resolution would open the door for NATO, the European Union, and the World Bank, among others, to play useful and appropriate roles.
