Mobilizing Public and Political Will
R2P is a tool which can empower civil society to hold governments accountable for the committment they made to prevent mass atrocities and push for action when needed. One major challenge in moving R2P from theory to practice is to ensure that the scope and limits of the norm as it has evolved are well understood in all parts of the world. When new situations arise that require preventive or reactive action by the International Community, leaders will only take real risks if their citizens demand it. Public demand however, depends on public understanding and sentiment.
WFUNA mobilizes public and political will to commit to R2P on two levels;
- Training UNA through workshops, capacity building, educational and interactive web-based material on how to use R2P as a tool for advocating for civilian protection and better engage in dialogue with governments, civil society, academic community and the UN on the issue of R2P
- Supporting UNAs in their promotion of R2P in their own civil society as a framework for the prevention of mass atrocity. As part of the project UNAs will disseminate information and educational materials, advocate to governments, political parties and interests groups and stimulate the media to increase public exposure to R2P within their domestic context and networks.
The greater civil society engagement on, and increased knowledge and awareness of R2P will lead to a greater demand on governments to respect human rights and their commitment to civilian protection under the R2P norm - strengthening the UN international framework to prevent mass human rights violations.
