As part of our series, we got to chat with Chapa Perera and Adhil Bakeer Markar, the UN Youth Delegates from Sri Lanka. It was especially an exciting time as the World Conference on Youth 2014 was to be held in their home country. Both delegates are studying law--Perera at the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, Markar at Sri Lanka Law College--and both have impressive leadership experience in youth organizations in their country. They tell us about their road to the UN and what plans they have for the youth of Sri Lanka.

New York, NY -- Global Action to Prevent War and Armed Conflict, the World Federation of UN Associations (WFUNA), Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, and Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) will hold a Reflection and Strategy Meeting, following the Thematic Debate of the President of the General Assembly “Ensuring Stable and Peaceful Societies,” which will take place at UN Headquarters on April 24 and 25, 2014.

We had the pleasure of chatting with Elise Zerrath and Florian Nowack, the 2013 UN Youth Delegates from Germany, when they were in New York last fall for the General Assembly. Elise, 26, is from Lübeck, Germany and studied International Relations and Human Geography from St. Andrews University in Scotland. Florian, 24, hails from Lohne, Germany and studied International Business and Intercultural Studies at Heilbronn University.

During its third week, the Human Rights Council focused on Item 4, 5 and 6 of the Agenda, namely the Human rights situations that require the Council’s attention, the Human rights bodies and mechanisms and the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

Under Item 4, the Council held three interactive dialogues on the situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Iran and Myanmar.

The second week of this 25th session of the Human Rights Council mainly focused on the  Item 3 of the Agenda,  namely the promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development. Thursday 13 March was dedicated to the annual full-day meeting on the rights of the child.

The 25th Human Rights Council (HRC) kicked off on Monday 3 March 2014. The Council, established in 2006, gathers 3 times a year in the Palais des Nations in Geneva, and holds its major session in March for a period of 4 weeks. The agenda of the council is divided into 10 items that will be tackled throughout the month.
