NEW YORK, NY – On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Bonian Golmohammadi, Secretary General of the World Federation of United Nations Associations and Mr. Max Trejo, Secretary General of the International Youth Organization for Iberoamerica (OIJ for its acronym in Spanish) met to consolidate a partnership between the two organizations. With the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding, both WFUNA and OIJ, will collaborate on strengthening youth participation at the United Nations, particularly participation of Iberoamerican youth.

The UN Youth Delegate Programme, one of the official mechanisms for youth participation, whereby national delegations include youth delegates to attend the UN General Assembly, has been established in just 25 countries approximately. In the the Iberoamerican region, only Mexico and Dominican Republic regularly send Youth Delegates.

OIJ is an international organization that brings together the Ministries of Youth of Iberoamerica with the aim of working towards the inclusion and integration of young people through youth public policies. The organization is comprised of 21 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Given OIJ’s role in advancing youth participation in Iberoamerica, WFUNA is certain this partnership will benefit many young people in the region. WFUNA looks forward to a fruitful cooperation in this and other youth related issues.
