Highlights of the 26th session of the Universal Periodic Review

The 26th session of the Universal Periodic Review Working Group, which kicked off in Geneva on 31 October 2016, has come to an end. The states under review for this session of the UPR cycle were Togo, the Syrian Arab Republic, Venezuela, Iceland, Zimbabwe, Lithuania, Uganda, Timor-Leste, the Republic of Moldova, Haiti and South Sudan.

Highlights of the 31st session of the Human Rights Council

The 31st session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) started off on Monday, 29 February 2016 with interesting debates, panel discussions, individual and clustered dialogues. Main topics were the human rights situation in the Syrian Arab Republic, the human rights situation in Myanmar, prevention of violent extremism and climate change, and right to health.

Highlights of the 26th session of the Human Rights Council

The 26th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) kicked off on Tuesday 10 June 2014. A high-level panel of discussion on the identification of good practices in combating female genital mutilation has been held. The Council discussed the women's rights for a full-day discussion. Trafficking human beings issue has been discussed as a main question requiring the Council's attention. The Human Rights Council adopted the Universal Periodic Review for 14 countries.

6th Session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous People

8-12 July 2013

The Expert Mechanism ended after one week of discussions with the adoption of two studies and five proposals to be presented to the Human Rights Council. One of the major topics of the session was Indigenous Peoples' right to the access to justice.

Week Three of the 23rd Session of the Human Rights Council

10 - 14 June 2013

The final week ended with the adoption of 28 resolutions. Whereas many were adopted by consensus, some resolutions including one on Syria and one on access to medicines, required States to vote. In addition new Special Procedures mandate holders for Haiti and Mali.

Universal Periodic Review

22 April - 3 May 2013

The 16th session of the Universal Periodic Review has come to an end. 14 countries from different regions of the world have had their human rights records scrutinized by UN Member States. As a part of the second cycle of UPR, the main focus of this session was on States' implementation of recommendations received during the first cycle.

14th Session of the Universal Periodic Review

22 October - 5 November 2012

In 2006 the General Assembly created the Universal Periodic Review, a unique peer process that review the human rights record of every state. During the 14th Session Czech Republic, Argentina, Gabon, Ghana, Ukraine, Guatemala, Benin, Republic of Korea, Switzerland, Pakistan, Zambia, Japan Peru and Sri Lanka were under scrutiny.

19th Special Session of the Human Rights Council on the deteriorating human rights situation in Syria and the killings in El-Houleh

1 June 2012

The Human Rights Council met on Friday 1st June at the request of Qatar, Turkey, the USA, Denmark, the EU, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, with the support of 47 Council members and observer states, to discuss the worsening human rights situation in Syria and, in particular, the massacre in El-Houleh, in which 108 people were murdered.

Economic and social council (ECOSOC) Substantive Session 2011 - Geneva - Overview

4th July - 29th July 2011

 

The ECOSOC finished its 2011 substantive session on Friday, 29th July 2011 after 20 days of meetings. This year’s substantive session was presided  by H.E.  Lazarous Kapambwe of Zambia. Over 50 resolutions were adopted on key issues such as women, humanitarian assistance, regional cooperation, energy, and crime prevention. Three new NGOs were granted accreditation.

Economic and Social Council July 2011, weekly summaries

4th July - 8th July 2011

The Economic and Social Council opened the 2011 substantive session with a focus on universal education agenda, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

The High-Level Segment focused on a broad range of issues relevant to the implementation of the United Nations development agenda, particularly on access to education and advancing the “Education for All” agenda. 


11th July -15th July 2011

The ECOSOC Council opened its Coordination Segment on Monday 11th and heard a presentation on the report of the Secretary-General entitled “Recovering from the world financial and economic crisis: a Global Jobs Pact”, which was followed by a general debate on the subject. In the afternoon, the Council held a panel discussion on the topic of “Global economic governance and development: enhancing the coherence and consistency of the international monetary, financial and trading systems”.


18th July - 22nd July 2011

The Economic and Social Council opened its last day of Operational Activities Segment for international development cooperation on Monday 18th and held a special dialogue on “How to define the concept of ‘critical mass’ of core resources?”. A key focus in the debate on the funding of operational activities for development over the past several years had been the need to significantly improve the balance between core and non-core funding.

On Friday 22 July the ECOSOC opened its General Segment and took action on a series of texts, including on the Programme of Action for Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2011-2020, in which it called on least developed countries, with the support of their development partners, to promote implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action...

17th Session of the Human Rights Council

30th May - 17th June 2011

On the 30th May 2011, the 17th session of the Human Rights Council opened with a panel on the issue of human rights of victims of terrorism, the discussion on women’s human rights, a panel on the promotion of a culture of tolerance and peace at all levels, based on respect for human rights and diversity of religions and beliefs and a panel on best practices in the fight against racism.

In addition, the Human Rights Council had a deepening engagement in country situations and a real concern in the urgent human rights situations, such as the cases of Syria, Yemen, Libya, Iran, Cote d’Ivoire, and other country specific resolution, such as Belarus, Somalia and Kyrgyzstan.

This HRC session opened with an array of dynamic addresses by foreign dignitaries from all corners of the world and demonstrated a strong commitment by the international community to tackle specific country situations of human rights crises and provide landmark steps to tackle violence and discrimination against LGBTs.

This is a State-driven process, under the direction of the Human Rights Council, and provides the opportunity for each State to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situations in their countries. Often credited as the greatest achievement of the Human Right Council, the UPR is designed to ensure equal treatment for every country during the review.

16th Session of the Human Rights Council

28th February - 25th March 2011

The sixteenth session of the Human Rights Council closed on Friday 25th March 2011. Presided by H.E. Mr Sihasak Phunangketkeow of Thailand, this session of the Council adopted 40 texts: it created a new Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, decided to dispatch a Commission to Ivory Coast, adopted texts on the rights of the child, freedom of religion or belief, right to food, the protection of human rights in the context of HIV/AIDS, rights of persons with disabilities and extended the mandates on the situation of human rights in DPRK, Myanmar, of the right to water, freedom of expression, human rights defenders, violence against women, torture and racism. Independent Experts’ mandates on effects of foreign debt and on minority issues and the Working group’s mandate on involuntary disappearances were also extended.

Special HRC Session on the Situation of Human Rights in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya 

25th February 2011

Today, 25 February 2011, in a rare show of unity, the Human Rights Council strongly condemned the violence in Libya and asked for an immediate halt to the attacks against peaceful protesters and innocent civilians. The “Special Session on the Situation of Human Rights in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya” was called by the European Union and received the support of over 56 UN Member States, including members of the Arab League and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference.  A grim atmosphere was palpable at the Council, where delegations expressed condolences to the Libyan people, and admiration for the braveness of the protesters.

Human Rights Council Working Group Review

When creating the Human Rights Council in March 2006, the United Nations General Assembly decided that the Council shall review its work and functioning five years after it has come into existence. It also provided that the status of the Council is to be reviewed at the level of the General Assembly.
