Dag Hammarskjöld and R2P

The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) is a global nonprofit organization representing and coordinating a membership of over 100 national United Nations Associations.

According to his biography by Brian Urquhart, Hammarskjöld believed the UN’s main task was to keep the peace, peace which could be “maintained through an enhanced respect for international law.” In honor of Hammarskjöld’s commitment to conflict prevention through a respect for international law, the protection of civilians and the call to increase UN presences in trouble spots around the world WFUNA has developed two projects to engage its global network in conflict prevention.

The Responsibility to Protect: Mobilizing Public and Political Will

Dag Hammarskjöld’s Symposium Series

WFUNA’s R2P projects act in the spirit of continuing the work of Dag Hammarskjöld by building the capacity of its UNAs to promote conflict prevention. By better understanding the Responsibility to Protect norm the program strengthens the UNA’s ability to advocate their governments to ensure the protection of all populations from mass atrocities.
