Guiding question

How can the WFUNA Youth Network support the implementation of UNSCR 2250?

Context and Rationale

The current narrative in media outlets portraying young people as protagonists of violent acts is unfortunately pervasive despite evidence indicating quite the opposite. Young people are active contributors to building peace. In December 2015, after the adoption of UNSCR 2250, the UN Security Council formally recognized the role young people currently play in peacebuilding and called on member states to further facilitate their engagement in peace processes

Taking into consideration that the young generation of today is the largest the world has ever known; increased efforts must be undertaken to empower and engage young people. According to the 2016 UN World Youth Report, although average voter turnout has increased since 1980, youth participation has declined.

When violent conflict erupts, young people are often the most affected. At the same time, they are equally underrepresented in peace agreements and reconciliation efforts. A disruption in economic and education opportunities for young people further affects the possibility of sustaining peace and risks missing the opportunity of leveraging the demographic dividend and contribute to long lasting peace.

To enhance and develop the capacity of the WFUNA Youth Network to support the implementation of UNSCR 2250.

  • By the end of the Youth Seminar, participants will learn about UNSCR 2250 through panels, workshops, presentations, talks, etc. aimed at building their capacities to promote, support, monitor and evaluate the implementation of UNSCR 2250.
  • By the end of the Youth Seminar, participants will have identified peace and security issues affecting young people in their communities.
  • By the end of the Youth Seminar, participants will have acquired the skills to alllow them to kickstart UNSCR 2250 Youth Hubs in their communities.

Who should apply?

  • United Nations Associations and United Nations Youth Associations young leaders, ages 18-29, who have demonstrated leadership and initiative in developing and/or strengthening the work of their UNA and UNYA in their communities.
  • The event is mainly reserved for members of the WFUNA Youth Network, although there are spots reserved for external applicants, ages 18-29.

About the WFUNA Youth Network
