21st Session of the Human Rights Council

The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) is a global nonprofit organization representing and coordinating a membership of over 100 national United Nations Associations.

The 21st Session of the Human Rights Council will take place from the 10th to 28th September 2012, in Geneva.


As ever, a wide range of issues will be addressed during this Session:

  • Country situations: Following on from the last Session, the Council will look again at the situation in Syria and will hear from the fact-finding mission on Gaza. There will also be discussions on Cambodia, Somalia and Sudan.
  • Economic & social rights: Extreme poverty, water & sanitation, hazardous waste and contemporary slavery will be discussed.
  • Civil & political rights: The Council will look at truth, justice and reparation as well as the issue of intimidation and reprisals against human rights defenders.
  • Other issues to be addressed this Session include armed conflict, indigenous people, the right to development and the most recent UPR reviews.

The following panels will take place during this Session of the Human Rights Council (state sponsors in brackets):

  • Access to justice by indigenous peoples (Guatemala)
  • Intimidation or reprisals against individuals/groups who cooperate with UN human rights mechanisms (Hungary)
  • Integrating rights of women throughout the UN system (Chile, Portugal)
  • Nelson Mandela International Day panel (South Africa)
